Why Ask “Is Christianity True?” At All?
Christianity isn't just a lifestyle choice — it makes specific, falsifiable claims about history, creation, and a resurrected man. That means it can be investigated. C.S. Lewis put it plainly: Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic, or Lord. There's no comfortable middle ground. This 90-day journey isn't about pressure — it's about honest inquiry. You owe it to yourself to examine the most world-shaping idea in human history with real rigor.
Can We Even Know Anything Is True?
Before evaluating Christianity, we need to know if truth is knowable. Skepticism about truth is self-defeating — if nothing can be known, you can't even know that. Logic itself is immaterial and universal, pointing toward a non-physical reality underpinning the universe.
The Universe Had a Beginning. Now What?
Modern cosmology confirms the universe had an absolute beginning — the Big Bang. Whatever begins to exist has a cause. The universe began. Therefore, the universe has a cause — one that is timeless, spaceless, and enormously powerful. This is the Kalam Cosmological Argument, and atheist philosophers take it seriously.
The Universe Is Calibrated to Absurd Precision
Physicist Roger Penrose calculated the odds of the universe's low-entropy initial conditions arising by chance: 1 in 10 to the power of 10¹²³. That number has more zeros than there are atoms in the universe. The fine-tuning of physical constants for life is the single most staggering fact in modern science.
Why Does Evil Feel Wrong to Everyone?
If the universe is purely material and valueless, then "the Holocaust was wrong" is merely a preference, like disliking mushrooms. But no one believes that. Our universal moral intuitions — about injustice, cruelty, dignity — only make sense if objective moral values are real, and that requires a moral lawgiver.
Why Is There Something It’s Like to Be You?
Neuroscience can map brain activity but cannot explain why there's subjective experience at all — why you feel the redness of red, or the ache of longing. This "hard problem of consciousness" is a profound mystery that materialism cannot solve but a personal God who creates conscious beings explains naturally.
Week 1 Pause: What Would Change Your Mind?
A key question every honest thinker should ask: What evidence would falsify my current worldview? Philosopher Antony Flew — one of the most influential atheists of the 20th century — changed his mind at age 81 due to the evidence. Intellectual honesty means staying genuinely open to where the evidence leads.
Did Jesus Actually Exist?
The existence of Jesus is one of the best-attested facts of ancient history. Non-Christian sources — Tacitus, Josephus, Pliny the Younger — all confirm his existence and execution. No serious secular historian denies he was a real person. The debate is about who he was, not whether he lived.
Can We Trust the Gospel Documents?
The New Testament has more manuscript evidence than any other ancient document — over 5,800 Greek manuscripts. Compare this to Julius Caesar's "Gallic Wars" (10 manuscripts) or Plato's works (7). By any standard of ancient textual criticism, the New Testament is extraordinarily reliable.
The Old Testament Predicted Jesus in Stunning Detail
Written centuries before Christ, the Hebrew scriptures contain over 300 prophecies fulfilled by Jesus — his birthplace (Micah 5:2), manner of death (Psalm 22), betrayal for 30 silver coins (Zechariah 11:12), and more. Mathematician Peter Stoner calculated the odds of 8 of these being fulfilled by chance: 1 in 10¹⁷.
The Empty Tomb: Four Facts Every Scholar Accepts
Even skeptical New Testament scholars widely accept: Jesus was buried, the tomb was empty, people claimed to see him risen, and the disciples genuinely believed it and died for that belief. These are the raw facts. The question is: what's the best explanation? Christianity says resurrection. What do you say?
Why Would the Disciples Die for a Lie?
People die for what they believe is true — but rarely for what they know is false. The disciples had nothing to gain from inventing a resurrection: no money, no power, only persecution. James, Peter, Paul — they died proclaiming the risen Christ. Liars make poor martyrs.
Archaeology Keeps Confirming the Bible
For centuries skeptics called the Hittites, the Pool of Siloam, and Pontius Pilate legendary inventions. Archaeology proved them wrong — repeatedly. Nelson Glueck, a renowned Jewish archaeologist, wrote that "no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference." The record of confirmation is remarkable.
What Does Science Actually Owe Christianity?
Modern science was largely founded by devout Christians: Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Mendel, Pasteur. They believed an orderly rational God created an orderly rational universe that could be investigated by rational minds. The Christian worldview didn't oppose science — it invented the conditions that made science possible.
The Question That Changes Everything
After two weeks of evidence — cosmological, historical, moral, archaeological — the honest question shifts from "Is there a God?" to "What do I do about Jesus?" This is what makes Christianity distinct from all other worldviews: it doesn't just propose a philosophy, it presents a person. Not a system to adopt, but a relationship to consider. You've reached the halfway point of Phase 1. Tomorrow we go deeper: the problem of evil, the reliability of religious experience, and what it means to stake a life on evidence.
